Phase 4 Films Acquires North American Rights to
JAY Z and Ron Howard’s MADE IN AMERICA
Film distributor acquires rights to collaborative documentary
following rave reviews at TIFF
Los Angeles, CA – November 8, 2013 – Phase 4 Films today announced its acquisition of the North American distribution rights to Academy Award® winning director Ron Howard’s first documentary, Made in America.
CAA brokered the U.S. rights deal on behalf of the filmmakers; the Canadian rights were handled by The Exchange.
The film follows rap superstar JAY Z through the planning of an unprecedented concert event and features world famous musicians including, Drake, Pearl Jam, Run DMC, The Hive, Passion Pit, Calvin Harris, Janelle Monáe and Skrillex. The film will be released in Summer 2014.
The Budweiser Made in America Festival grossed $5 million in ticket sales and injected more than $10 million into the Philadelphia economy, stimulating businesses struggling through recession. Nearly 80,000 people attended the Festival, which was curated and planned entirely by JAY Z, who also headlined the concert. This was documented through performance footage and backstage interviews captured by director Ron Howard and produced by the Academy Award®winning Brian Grazer.
MADE IN AMERICA premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and is produced by Imagine Entertainment, Marcy Media, RadicalMedia, in association with Participant Media.
Made In America tells the story of rapper turned mogul JAY Z’s journey to planning a genre-defying festival intended to uplift the American people in the depths of an economic recession. Held in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American Independence, JAY Z’s eclectic taste brought together culture and music, featuring performers from all genres of music, including electronic, pop, hip hop, rock and folk. Howard’s raw concert footage gives life to epic cross-genre performances, including Run DMC’s first live performance since the death of DJ Jam Master Jay in 2002, accompanied by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.
“This is not a concert film but rather a reflection of the fabric of what it means to be Made in America – what the festival represents, why JAY is doing it, and how he relates to each artist,” said Ron Howard. “Made In America is intended to showcase JAY Z’s struggle for success and illustrate how he has become a voice and an icon for a generation of driven and creative youth.”
“We are thrilled to release this amazing film,” said Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films. “Made In America is an uplifting and inspiring piece, not just for its musical performances but for the energy and resilience that it portrays.”
